Wentworth Miller–a biracial actor who generally plays white characters, I think, like on the TV show Prison Break (where his head’s shaved). Halle is way beyond 15, and Genna is dark-skinned…sadly, I think most people would find it easier to name light-skinned actresses since they’re cast more often in lead roles in Hollywood…
Reminds me of that time I told you a reader suggested Jada Pinkette and Queen Latifa for the same role. ((sigh))
I think the young girl who played in Akeelah and The Bee might work though I don’t know if she can exude the kind of toughness and attitude I see in Genna. Genna is pretty but not beautiful. She is strong and bold.
I just saw the Halle Berry comment. Definitely too old to play a 15 year old and not dark enough. I’m thinking Keke Palmer (Akeelah) as well.
I’ve never heard of Wentworth Miller, but you’re right his younger brother could do it. Or someone a little cuter🙂
Right–to me, Genna’s beautiful, and to Judah, too…but that runs up against the Hollywood definition of beauty, which is something altogether different. Have you seen the actress who plays Precious in the film adaptation of PUSH? There are great actors out there, “unknowns,” but Hollywood likes to go with the faces that will guarantee box office buck$…
right? there are so many talented actors out there who never get a chance b/c casting agents only want a particular “look,” which excludes most black women…Monique is really good in that film, too–EVIL! (in the trailer, at least; I haven’t seen the whole film)
Camille winbush is now on the secret Life of the American teenager. I think she or Keke Palmer would be good as Genna, but some unknowns would be good as well. Andrea Lewis or Sarah Barrable-Tishaeur (both from Degrassi) could work, although they are both pretty light.
I do hav a lil crush on paul! lol
Keke was the choice of my two friends, too…I never saw Akeelah, but will google her; would be great to find someone with baby locs ~ imagine how awful a fake dred wig would look! and a lot of actresses, I think, wouldn’t be willing to cut off their hair for the part…
